In 1956, Hungary was a nation of ten million people that lived under the thumb of the communist Soviet Union, a powerful country twenty times its size. For thirteen days in 1956, however, Hungarians revolted against communist rule. What first looked like a major victory, however, quickly turned into a terrible tragedy when Soviet troops and tanks were dispatched to violently crush the revolution. The uprising, its subsequent brutal repression and the resulting exodus of citizens to the west had a profound international impact, with reverberations that can still be felt today.
